Winnow

Choosing a theme instead of a resolution

For the past few years, part of my resolution process has been choosing a theme for the year.

In 2023 it was “This Year, No Fear” — a reminder to stop avoiding uncomfortable things.
In 2024 it became “New Year, New Gear” — leveling up in multiple areas.

For 2025, the goal felt different: clarity.

I wanted to remove distractions and focus only on what truly matters.

A friend joked that I was overcomplicating the idea of simplifying. She suggested a single word — something direct like Focus or Streamline.

After searching, the right word appeared:

Winnow

Separating what matters from what doesn’t

Winnowing is the process of separating wheat from chaff.

When wheat is harvested, the edible kernels must be separated from the outer husk. Farmers sift the grain so air can carry away what isn’t valuable while the useful part remains.

The metaphor is simple:
keep what matters — release what doesn’t.

Win Now

While writing the word, I noticed something else:

Win + Now

It became a second reminder:

  • Win by working only on meaningful actions

  • Now by acting with urgency instead of procrastinating

Success doesn’t only exist at the finish line.
You can win daily by choosing the right priorities.

Applying focus to friendships

One of my biggest goals is growing Adventure-Us into a place where people experience real connection and meaningful experiences.

That means choosing actions that directly build community:

  • scheduling events

  • inviting participation

  • encouraging authentic interaction

Social group bonding during organized activities

Each small action contributes to the larger mission — helping people find genuine friendships.

A simple place to start

If your goals include:

  • being more active

  • making memories

  • checking off bucket list items

  • making new friends

Then the first step is simply showing up somewhere designed for connection.

Focus on what matters.
Win now.
